Louisville Cardinals Basketball Details

Not many college basketball programs can claim multiple national championships to their name. You’ll get to experience that history and excellence when you attend a basketball game at Louisville.

The Cardinals’ basketball program dates back to 1911, and they reached their first Final Four with coach “Peck” Hickman in 1959. But they became a national power under Denny Crum, who was the head coach from 1971 until 2001. Crum led Louisville to six Final Four appearances, including national titles in 1980 and 1986, and won 675 career games. Consensus All-America players from Louisville include Hall of Famer Wes Unseld, Charlie Tyra, Jim Price, Pervis Ellison, Clifford Rozier, Russ Smith and Darrell Griffith. Griffith, who led the Cardinals to their 1980 national title, was known as “Dr. Dunkenstein” for his acrobatic play.

Louisville spent time in the Missouri Valley, Metro, Conference USA and Big East conferences before joining the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2014.

With their ACC rivalries still emerging, Louisville’s biggest foe is intrastate opponent Kentucky. Just 75 miles apart, the two basketball powers meet every season in late December or early January.

Home games are played in downtown Louisville at the KFC Yum! Center, which opened in 2010 and holds just over 22,000 fans for basketball. Located near the banks of the Ohio River and just three miles from campus, the arena is within five blocks of a host of parking spaces, making it very accessible for anyone attending a game.
