Louisville Cardinals Football Details

The Louisville’s successful football history has seen some great quarterback play, from Pro Football Hall of Famer Johnny Unitas to Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson. Other big names in Cardinal lore include NFL All-Pro defensive players Tom Jackson and Elvis Dumervil.

The football program here began in 1912, and spent its early years mostly battling in-state rivals. Notable coaches in Louisville history include Lee Corso, Howard Schnellenberger, Charlie Strong and Bobby Petrino.

The Cardinals host conference teams and others at recently renovated Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium, which seats 65,000 fans. ACC Coastal Division rivals include traditional powerhouses such as Clemson and Florida State.

However, Louisville’s most heated rivalry is with Kentucky, against whom they resumed battles in 1994 following a 70-year hiatus. The Cardinals host the Wildcats in even-numbered years, with the contest for the Governor’s Cup played on the final weekend of the season. Though the schools are less than 80 miles apart, the ride home can be long for the losing team.

If you arrive early for a home game, get yourself to CardMarch. Approximately two hours and 15 minutes before kickoff, the Cardinal team is dropped off on Floyd Street at the south end of the stadium. You can cheer them on before enjoying more pregame festivities.

Looking to tailgate at Louisville? Note that this activity is limited to lots designated for game day parking. Check out the Red Rage Tailgate, which looks like a pretty good time.
