Marquette Golden Eagles Basketball Details

The Marquette Golden Eagles are a fixture in the NCAA Tournament. The school’s 32 all-time appearances puts them in the upper echelon of March Madness success, tied with UConn, Arizona, and Temple for 12th most across the NCAA. However, it has been years since Marquette won it all -- their lone championship came in 1977 over the UNC Tarheels. Marquette’s biggest long-time rivals are Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Louisville and DePaul. The Golden Eagles have produced numerous players who compete in the NBA, the most recent being Henry Ellenson drafted by the Detroit Pistons in 2016. Coach Steve Wojciechowski has been the head coach since 2014. He was previously the assistant coach at Duke for 15 years and was part of Duke’s winning tradition. Coach Wojciechowski has a “Win Every Day” philosophy for the foundation of Marquette’s program, which has helped with the program’s recruiting process.

The Golden Eagles ended the 2016-2017 season with a conference record of 10-8, finishing sixth in Big East Conference. Their overall record was 19-3. They made an appearance in the 2017 NCAA Tournament, losing in the first round to South Carolina. The Golden Eagles have a strong group of new recruits joining the team for the 2017-2018 season. They have four strong freshmen coming in that have potential to make an immediate impact, including three-star recruit Theo John. John is a 6’9” forward who was ranked fifth amongst recruits in his home state of Minnesota. Three-star guard Greg Elliott from Michigan, three-star forward Ike Eke from Michigan and three-star forward Jamal Cain from Michigan will also be joining the Golden Eagles for the 2017-2018 season. Young talent, great coaching, and a history of success drive the Eagles, who will be looking to break through with a tournament run in 2018.
