Maryland Terrapins Basketball Details
Finishing 2nd in the Big Ten in 2016-17, the Mark Turgeon-coached Maryland Terrapins looked poised for a deep NCAA tournament. Instead, the Terps lost in the first round against Xavier 76-65. It’s been tough for coach Turgeon and Maryland in the postseason. The team hasn’t advanced past the Regional Semifinal in any season under Turgeon, with the team’s best run coming in 2015-16.
Unfortunately for the Terrapins, the team will be playing the upcoming season without star guard Melo Trimble, who left for the 2017 NBA Draft. Trimble provided instant offense for Maryland, averaging 16.8 points and nearly four assists per game last season. With Trimble gone, much of the backcourt play falls on the shoulders of sophomore Anthony Cowan, who had an impressive rookie season averaging 10.3 points per contest. Fellow sophomore guard Kevin Huerter should see a bigger role on the offensive as well. He was solid last season, averaging nine points and five rebounds. Justin Jackson also returns for his sophomore year and he’ll certainly see starting minutes at the forward position. Two incoming freshmen are also poised to make an impact for the Terps. Bruno Fernando is a four-star center recruit, towering at 6’10” and 240 pounds, while Darryl Morsell was ranked in the ESPN Top 100 as a combo guard out of Mount St. Joseph High School. There aren’t many folks that have high hopes for this Maryland squad, but the fans that fill Xfinity Center in College Park throughout the year will be very excited to see what this Terps team can do in the ACC this season.
