Post-Idol, Melinda Doolittle breaks out (Updated February 20, 2013)
Since her time on "American Idol," Melinda Doolittle has been the oxymoron of her last name. Since the release of her debut album in 2009, she has worked tirelessly on dedication to a myriad of projects. From writing a book to performing at the White House, her love of music is evident at every turn.
Just what did Doolittle do with herself post-Idol? Beyond her album release, she used her newfound celebrity to write and release a book of life lessons. "Beyond Me" was a collection of what Doolittle considered poignant, often humorous stories about her life. Her goal was to provide the reader with practical guidance to overcoming personal obstacles. It also allowed her to reflect on her own life, and milestones like graduating from Belmont University with a music degree just years after a choir teacher actually pleaded with her not to sing.
Doolittle extended her talents to television when she became the first African American character on "Veggie Tales," a popular children's cartoon. She was featured as 'Cassie Cassava' on the 2011 DVD, '"Twas The Night Before Easter." Later in the year, she released an original Christmas single, "God Bless Us Everyone," and was back in the studio writing and recording songs for the release of her next studio album.
Away from the spotlight, Doolittle also takes times to give back. She has worked with Vanderbilt Children's Hospital, Ronald McDonald House and The League, which promotes involvement in community service among children. She also works extensively with Malaria No More, helping to raise awareness of this preventable disease. And in support of Black History Month, she was featured on a special project from Curb Records called "Lift Every Voice," a celebration of legendary songwriter James Weldon Johnson.
