Memphis Grizzlies Details

The Grizzlies were one of two 1995-96 expansion franchises that brought the NBA to Canada. Their original home was in Vancouver, British Columbia as the Vancouver Grizzlies. The Grizzlies struggled for all six of their seasons in Vancouver, and the team never made the playoffs. Attendance (and the value of the Canadian dollar) suffered, and the team moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 2001. The Grizzlies play at the FedEx Forum, and they are the only major professional sports team based in Memphis.

The Grizzles drafted Pau Gasol 3rd overall in 2001. Gasol won rookie of the year in the Grizzlies first season in Memphis, but the Grizzlies would continue to struggle for some time. In 2004, after nine NBA seasons, the team finally made its first appearance in the playoffs. Their Bad News Bears reputation changed soon after: the Grizzlies have made the playoffs seven seasons in a row, going back to the 2010-11 season. Their deepest run came in the 2013 playoffs, where they made it to the Western Conference Finals for the first time but were swept by the San Antonio Spurs.

Last season, first-year head coach David Fizdale—previously an assistant for the Heat—took the team to the seventh seed in West, and point guard Mike Conley set a career high with 20.5 points per game. There’s a lot of talent in the Western Conference, the Grizzlies will need more good performances from Conley and another all-star performance from center Marc Gasol, Pau’s younger brother, who played in the 2017 All Star Game. The Grizzlies lost Zach Randolph to the Sacramento Kings in free agency and will have to rely on their free-agent signings Ben McLemore and Tyreke Evans and young players like Wayne Selden to help them make the playoffs for an eighth consecutive season.
