The Miami Heat play basketball in one of the most vibrant cities in the world. But when the Heat are in the playoffs, they often grab the attention from everything else that Miami has to offer. With a playoff history filled with great players and entertaining rivalries, things have certainly been cool when the Heat have been on in the postseason.

Heat teams in the 1990s were regular competitors in the playoffs, thanks to their hard-nosed brand of basketball that turned the game into a contest of strength and physicality moreso than many of the other components of the game. Those teams were led by a dominant frontcourt, with Alonzo Mourning as the team’s leader. During that era, the Heat developed a great rivalry with the New York Knicks, which saw the two teams engage in physical, grind-it-out games on a regular basis in the playoffs.

Miami playoff basketball got its first NBA championship when Dwyane Wade led the Heat to a six-game Finals victory over the Dallas Mavericks in what was an incredible comeback. Down 2-0 in the series, Wade became a superhero in the final four games of the series, getting to the rim at will and making Mavericks defenders feel powerless in the process.

And who could forget the Big Three era in Miami? LeBron James, Chris Bosh, and Wade teamed up from 2010-2014, in a run that produced four straight NBA Finals appearances and two championships. During that run, the Heat got the better of the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Finals as well as the San Antonio Spurs.

Miami faced the Spurs twice in the Finals during that stretch, with legends of the game like LeBron taking on all-time greats from San Antonio like Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili. Those series felt like so much more than basketball games, as you knew that they were legacy-defining moments for so many of the players involved.
