Miami Marlins Postseason History

Previously the Florida Marlins, the Miami Marlins have been a dynamic team in years that they have reached the postseason. Combining a number of high-quality pitchers on one team on multiple occasions, the Marlins have found a way to shock the world or deliver some of the game’s great playoff moments.

Perhaps the greatest of those moments came in 1997. The Marlins were playing in just their fifth season since becoming an expansion team for the 1993 campaign. And just five years into their existence, they won an incredible seven-game World Series against the Cleveland Indians. To get there, they needed to defeat established powers in the San Francisco Giants and Atlanta Braves, which they managed to do.

The 1997 World Series itself was incredible, with the Marlins winning Game Seven in a thrilling 11 inning affair. Florida won the game on a bases loaded walk off single by Edgar Renteria, who knocked in Craig Counsell with his screaming line drive up the middle. The hit came against Charles Nagy, a starting pitcher who was brought in to pitch in extra innings.

In 2003, the Marlins did it again, this time shocking the New York Yankees in the World Series. This Marlins team boasted some great starting pitching, with Dontrelle Willis and Josh Beckett leading the team throughout the season. Appropriately, the Marlins won the series in Game Six, with Beckett throwing a complete game shutout of one of the best offensive teams in that period of the game.

Of course, the Marlins had plenty of bats that could put runs on the board themselves, including the great Ivan Rodriguez behind the plate. Rodriguez brought not only the ability to hit to the team, but brought a much needed veteran presence to the group as well.

When it comes to rivalries in the playoffs for the Marlins, the team’s epic battle with the Cleveland Indians would put them high on the list. In terms of National League competition, the Giants would be a good choice. The two teams squared off in the Marlins World Series runs in 1997 and 2003 in the Division Series, with the Marlins having to quiet the bat of Barry Bonds in the 2003 matchup.
