Michigan became a charter member of the Big Ten Conference in 1985, and began playing basketball in 1909. Its won the national title in 1989, when coach Steve Fisher – who replaced Bill Frieder two days prior to the tournament – was at the helm, which culminated with an overtime win over Seton Hall in the final.

Sharpshooting Glen Rice was named as that tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, and set the record for most points in a single NCAA tournament with 184.

The Fab Five – though the group didn’t win a national title – took the college basketball world by storm in 1991. Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson comprised the team’s starting five. All were freshmen, and the group was arguably the greatest recruiting class of all time. These Wolverines finished as the national runner-up in both 1992 and 1993 before Webber left for the NBA.

John Beilein, who was named as head coach in 2007, has led another era of Michigan basketball excellence. Michigan reached eight NCAA tournaments and was the national runner-up twice in Beilein’s first 11 seasons.

Home games are played on campus at Crisler Center, which opened in 1967 and holds nearly 13,000 fans for basketball. The adjacent Maize and Blue parking lots require permits, but there are plenty of options within walking distance of the arena.
