Montreal Impact Details
The Montreal Impact had a successful 2016 season, making the Eastern Conference final for the first time in franchise history. Despite losing 7-5 on aggregate to rivals Toronto FC, the campaign will be remembered fondly and will serve as motivation to advance even further in 2017.
Didier Drogba is no longer around, but the Impact has perhaps the league’s best attack even without the legendary Ivorian striker. Designated Player Ignacio Piatti was amongst the league’s top scorers last season with 17 goals. He is joined up front by MLS veteran Dominic Oduro and Italian Matteo Mancosu, who joined the Impact permanently after starting on loan from Serie A club Bologna a season ago. The club’s starting midfielders are all over 30 years of age, but this means that they have a great deal of experience. Patrice Bernier, a Quebec native, is one of the most decorated Canadian internationals of all-time, and Marco Donadel and Hernan Bernadello have played in Serie A and La Liga, respectively. Infusing youth into the center of the park is Adrian Arregui, a promising Argentina native who is joining on loan from Temperley in his home country. The team will get an additional boost in midfield when Swiss international Blerim Dzemaili joins at the conclusion of the Serie A season. The defense, led by Laurent Ciman and Ambroise Oyongo, can be inconsistent, and it will be looking to improve, especially in front of the home crowd at Saputo Stadium, located a few miles outside Downtown Montreal.
