Montreal Impact Details

Expansion-magic has gripped Major League Soccer more than once. Atlanta United FC qualified for the playoffs and gave the Columbus Crew a scare in the 2017 MLS Cup knockout round. Almost two decades before that, the Chicago Fire stunned the soccer community by winning the league title in its first year of competitive play.

But neither franchise accomplished quite what the Montreal Impact did upon joining MLS in 2012.

Club after club from the United States has failed and flailed in the CONCACAF Champions League, an elimination contest pitting the finest professional squads from leagues across North America. MLS teams play in the Champions League; MLS teams get eliminated. It's clockwork, especially for a fledgling franchise that finds itself in the mix.

The Impact didn't get that memo. In 2015, Montreal became only the second MLS team to eliminate a Liga MX (top-division Mexico) side from the CONCACAF Champions League knockout stage, beating Pachuca in two legs on away goals. L'Impact de Montréal would be the first Canadian team to reach the Champions League Final, losing to Club América in a hotly-contested match. Not only had the Impact made an impact in their own league after a brief five years, then had won respect for Major League Soccer across the continent.

New coach Remi Garde has a talented roster to work with in 2018. Goalkeeper Evan Bush is a strong player with a Golden Glove award under his belt. Jeisson Vargas, The Chilean attacking midfielder signed a contract to appear with Montreal in 2018 and perhaps until 2021. Vargas is only 20 years old and has starred with Universidad Católica. The youngster will partner with veteran Ignacio Piatti for what could be one of the most imposing midfield lineups in MLS.
