The Devils may be best known for their stifling teams from the 90s and early 2000s, which made multiple playoff runs. With legendary goalie Martin Brodeur serving as the last line of defense, the Devils were able to play a tight game in front of him and became one of the league’s hardest teams to play against.

The Devils reached the Stanley Cup Final for the first time after the lockout-shortened 1994-95 season. After some bad years in the early 80s, the franchise became respectable in the 90s and soon earned the hardware to prove it. Though they struggled at the beginning of the season, the Devils rallied in the second half and were hot going into the playoffs. They lost only four games in the postseason and never trailed a series by more than one game. In the franchise’s first Stanley Cup Final, the Devils swept the Detroit Red Wings. The rest of the NHL had to get used to seeing the Devils make deep playoff runs: they made the playoffs every season from 1997 to 2010 and frequently won their division during that time. In 2000, the Devils returned to the Stanley Cup Final and defeated the Dallas Stars; in 2003, the Devils won a third Stanley Cup, defeating the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the final round.

After missing the playoffs for the first time in more than ten years, the Devils rebounded in the 2011-12 season. The team qualified for the playoffs for the final time of Martin Brodeur’s career. They reached the Stanley Cup Final once again, but they were defeated by the Los Angeles Kings.

The Devils missed the playoffs for five consecutive years after their 2012 run to the Stanley Cup Final. In 2018, an MVP season from Taylor Hall propelled the Devils back into the playoffs. Though they did not advance past the first round, the young Devils team showed potential to build on a surprising season.
