New York Islanders Details

2016-17 was a very up-and-down season for the Metropolitan Division New York Islanders. Midway through the season, head coach Jack Capuano was let go after an uninspired 17-17-8 start. He was replaced by interim Doug Weight and the Islanders finished the season winning 24 of the final 40 games. After the success of the second half of the season, Weight had the “interim” dropped from his title and will assume full-time head coaching duties for the Islanders, who play out of the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The second half of the season was encouraging for New York, but the team fell short of making the Stanley Cup Playoffs after making them in the two previous seasons. It was the defensive issues that did the Islanders in last year, as the team finished 22nd in the league in the goals against category. The offense, led by captain John Tavares, was one of the best.

Tavares was a force for the Islanders and should be again during the upcoming season. In 2016-17, he finished with 28 goals and 38 assists. He got a lot of help from center Anders Lee, who contributed 34 goals and 18 assists in 81 games. Speaking of help, the Islanders will have more of it on the offensive end after signing Edmonton’s Jordan Eberle. The winger finished last season with 20 goals and 31 assists and should be a welcome addition to the Tavares-led offense. The goaltending should also stay strong, considering starter Thomas Greiss will be back in net for New York. Last season, he finished with a 26-18-5 record and a .913 save percentage.
