The New York Knicks are one of the NBA's marquee franchises. Playing in one of the cathedrals of basketball, the Knicks have spent plenty of time around the top of the NBA hierarchy. The team was established in 1946, and has since developed a passionate fan base that has fed off of the city’s love for the sport to create a truly unique atmosphere in the NBA.

Some of the best players in league history have worn Knicks uniforms in their careers. Walt “Clyde” Frazier and Willis Reed were the star players during the team’s run of success in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Scoring sensation Bernard King was a legend as a Knick in the 1980s for his ability to seemingly score at will. And Patrick Ewing was the Knicks’ centerpiece in the 1990s. All four of those players weren’t just great, but were great at the center of teams that played in a city that many consider to be the basketball capital of the world.

The most successful period in Knicks history came in the 1970s, which coincided with the popularity of the league in general starting to grow exponentially. Knicks fans were treated to two championships during that time period, with titles coming in 1970 and 1973. The 1970 championship season was iconic in part due to Willis Reed’s resilience, as the famous images of him making his way back onto the court to fight through an injury and help the Knicks defeat the Los Angeles Lakers are still remembered to this day.

If the 1970s were the Knicks’ most successful period, the 1990s were perhaps their most memorable. With a hard-nosed attitude fostered by head coach Pat Riley, and his replacement Jeff Van Gundy, the Knicks had an edge to them that saw them take part in rivalries with the other top teams of their era. Led by star center Patrick Ewing, and the fearsome Charles Oakley and Anthony Mason, the Knicks had epic battles with the Miami Heat, Indiana Pacers, and Chicago Bulls throughout the decade.
