New York Knicks Details

The Knicks are one of the NBA’s original teams and have played in New York City since 1946. The Knicks’ home arena is Madison Square Garden.

The Knicks’ unusual name is a shortened version of “Knickerbockers,” which refers to the original Dutch settlers of New York. The Knicks signed local college players to form their original team, and they played in the NBA’s—then called the BAA—first ever game. They defeated the Toronto Huskies 68-66 at Maple Leaf Gardens.

Despite the Knicks’ long history, they’ve won the NBA Championship only twice. They won both titles in the 1970s under Hall of Fame coach Red Holzman. The 1970 and ’73 championship teams both also featured Hall of Fame players Willis Reed and Walt Frazier.

In 1985, The Knicks won the NBA’s first draft lottery and used their pick to select Patrick Ewing. Ewing won Rookie of the Year in his first season and was a major part of the Knicks’ strong teams throughout the 1990s. The team made the playoffs each season and made it to the NBA Finals in 1994 and 1999. Ewing left the team in 2000, and the Knicks have had to rebuild for much of the current millennium.

The Knicks acquired Carmelo Anthony in a major trade in 2011. Anthony helped the team to three playoff appearances, including a trip to the second round in 2013. The Knicks have not put together a winning season since then, and Anthony has requested a trade and may leave town before the 2017-18 season.

The rebuild in New York will center around 7-foot-3 inch Kristaps Porzingis. The Knicks drafted Porzingis with the 4th pick in the 2015 draft. In his second season in 2016-17, Porzingis built on a solid rookie year and developed a reputation for his athleticism and rebounding ability. Porzingis is just 21 and will develop alongside 2017 8th overall pick Frank Ntilikina as the Knicks start to build a contender.
