Nine Inch Nails Details

Founded in 1988, Nine Inch Nails is an American industrial rock band that was started by Trent Reznor in Cleveland, OH. The band has seen many members come and go over the years. One notable member to join after the band’s founding is Atticus Ross. Prior to joining the band, Ross worked with Reznor on the movie The Social Network in 2010, for which they took home the Academy Award for Best Original Score. Then, in 2013, the pair won a Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for their soundtrack to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Prolific music makers, the band has released more than ten albums, as well as a variety of singles, music videos, soundtracks, and more. Nine Inch Nails' second studio album, The Downward Spiral, entered the Billboard 200 in 1994 at number two, selling over four million copies in the United States alone. Following albums, including The Fragile and With Teeth, also appeared on the Billboard 200.

In 2004, Rolling Stone included Nine Inch Nails on the magazine's list of the 100 greatest artists of all time. Nine Inch Nails has received four awards from 25 nominations, including two Grammy Awards for the songs “Wish” and “Happiness in Slavery” in 1993 and 1996 respectively.

  • Wish
  • Closer
  • Into the Void
  • The Perfect Drug
  • Happiness in Slavery

The unique thing about Nine Inch Nails is the variety of instruments used in their songs. In fact, Reznor himself is trained in classical piano, guitar, saxophone, and more. While many of the band’s songs have dark themes, there are equally as many upbeat tracks to enjoy.

Listen to “The Hand That Feeds” and you’ll hear these lyrics, “You're keeping in step in the line/ You got your head held high and you feel just fine/ Because you do what you're told/ But inside your heart, it is black and it's hollow and it's cold."
