North Carolina Tar Heels Basketball Details
Chapel Hill is about as picturesque a college town as you can imagine. And nothing gets the students more excited than a Tar Heel basketball game.
North Carolina has been playing basketball since 1910, and became a charter member of the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1953. Since then, they have been fixtures in the NCAA Tournament, and made more Final Four appearances than any other school. The Tar Heels are among the top teams in all-time winning percentage, and are one of just a handful of schools with more than 2,000 victories.
The list of decorated North Carolina players reads like a who’s who of college basketball. Three Tar Heels were named in 1996 to a list of 50 Greatest Players in NBA History: Billy Cunningham, Michael Jordan and James Worthy. Multiple players and coaches from North Carolina are members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
The Heels play home games on campus at the Dean Smith Center, named after their legendary head coach who won 879 games and a couple of national championships. The “Dean Dome” opened in 1986, and holds 21,750 fans for basketball. The “Tar Heel Shuttle Service” offers transportation to and from from various lots around campus.
When it comes to college basketball rivalries, nothing surpasses Carolina-Duke, whose campuses are less than 10 miles apart. The teams have battled each other since 1920, and account for more than half of ACC Tournament championships.
