Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football Details
With 13 national championships, a record seven Heisman Trophy winners and a unique television contract with NBC, The University of Notre Dame’s football squad represents one of the most iconic teams in all of sports. Founded in 1887, the team has been coached by some of the most successful and legendary coaches in the history of the game. Knute Rockne won three national titles in the 1920s, Frank Leahy won four championships in the ‘40s and Ara Parseghian won two in his tenure from 1964-1974. Fighting Irish Heisman winners include quarterback Paul Hornung in 1956 and, most recently, WR Tim Brown in 1987. Since 1930, the Irish have played their home games at Notre Dame Stadium, which looks out upon the campus’ Golden Dome and the mural of “Touchdown Jesus.” On their way out of the locker room onto the field, Notre Dame players make a point of touching the iconic “Play Like a Champion Today” sign that coach Lou Holtz first put up in 1986.
Today’s Irish are coached by Brian Kelly, who entered the 2017 season with a 59-31 record with the program. In the 2012 season, just his third with the team, he led Notre Dame to a 12-0 regular season and its first National Championship Game appearance since 1991. After a disappointing 2016, the Irish are primed to climb back among the nation’s elite teams in 2017. Led by Mike McGlinchey and Quenton Nelson, one of the country’s best offensive lines will pave the way for skill position players like RB Josh Adams and WR Equanimeous St. Brown. An experienced defensive unit features stud linebackers Nyles Morgan and Drue Tranquill.
