Oakland Athletics Details
The Athletics were a founding member of the American League in 1901. The team originally played in Philadelphia. The A’s won five World Series titles in Philly before a change in ownership caused the team to move to Kansas City in 1956. After a little over a decade, the A’s moved to their current home in Oakland, California. The Oakland A’s won three consecutive World Series titles from 1972-1974 and added another in 1989. The Philadelphia and Oakland A’s have won nine world series titles — good for third-most among all MLB teams.
The A’s were the subject of the popular book Moneyball, which was later adapted into a film starring Brad Pitt. Billy Beane, the A’s general manager from 1998-2016, helped to start a movement that changed how baseball clubs evaluated talent. The A’s could not afford to spend money the way that the Yankees, Red Sox, and other large-market teams could, so they used different metrics when searching for players. Statistics commonly referred to today, like on-base percentage, Wins Above Replacement (WAR), and strikeout/walk ratio were legitimized by Beane and the Athletics. The A’s had the sixth-lowest payroll in the 2002 season but were able to win 103 games.
In 2017, the A’s finished in fifth place in the AL West Division and missed the playoffs for the third consecutive season. Though the season as a whole may have been disappointing, the A’s finished strong and had a 17-12 record in September. Left fielder Khris Davis was the team’s best player at the plate: he hit 43 home runs and had 110 RBIs. On the mound, Sean Manaea led the way with 12 wins and 140 strikeouts. The team also boasted a lot of batting power, hitting the fourth-most HRs of any team in baseball. Oakland will look to turn more of those longballs into wins in 2018.
The A’s home ballpark is the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. The team has played at the Coliseum since they moved to Oakland in 1968, as the club’s attempts to build a new park have not been successful. The A’s are the only MLB team to still share a stadium with a football team: they currently share the Coliseum with the NFL’s Oakland Raiders. The A’s will become the Coliseum’s sole tenant after the Raiders move to Las Vegas in 2019 or 2020.
