Paul McCartney Details
Born in Liverpool, England in June of 1942, Sir James Paul McCartney is an award-winning singer-songwriter. Perhaps best known as the bass guitarist and singer for the Beatles, Paul McCartney went on to pursue a solo career in 1970. McCartney’s family had musical roots; his father was a trumpet player and pianist who encouraged Paul to pursue music. Young Paul McCartney started to write songs and perform them at talent shows and competitions. He loved to write, sing, and play the guitar.
When Paul was 15 years old, he met John Lennon. Paul was invited to join John’s band, the Quarrymen, as a rhythm guitarist. After Stuart Sutcliffe and George Harrison joined, the band was renamed the Beatles in August of 1960. At that time, Paul McCartney had no idea what a phenomenon this band would turn into and how his life would forever change.
In 1965, musicologist Ian MacDonald wrote McCartney “would be in the ascendant not only as a songwriter, but also as instrumentalist, arranger, producer, and de facto musical director of the Beatles.” In 1966, the Beatles released the album Revolver and McCartney completed a film score for the UK production of “The Family Way.” McCartney took home an Ivor Novello Award for Best Instrumental Theme for that project.
Throughout the years, McCartney saw much success by way of the Beatles and on his own. Despite a 1969 rumor that he had died in a car accident, McCartney was very much alive and he announced his departure from the Beatles in April of 1970. While leaving the band was no easy choice, Paul McCartney continued to thrive as a solo artist. In fact, in 1990 he was awarded the prestigious Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
