Philadelphia Union Details
It was surprising to many soccer observers that, when Major League Soccer announced its 10-member group of charter franchises in 1994, Philadelphia was not on the list. One of the biggest and most passionate sports cities in the United States – and one with a decorated soccer history – would have to wait its turn and see how the young league grew before it could consider having a team of its own. And over the years, many groups tried to bring MLS to Philadelphia without success, until commissioner Don Garber finally made the announcement that the City of Brotherly Love would be joining the league in time for the 2010 season with Keystone Sports and Entertainment being the owners and operators.
The next step was securing a soccer-specific stadium; the ownership group worked with government officials to acquire a site underneath the Commodore Barry Bridge on the banks of the Delaware River, then the plans for Talen Energy Stadium came together. Philadelphia Union played its first group of home matches at Lincoln Financial Field in downtown Philadelphia before Talen Energy Stadium was ready in June of 2010, and by that time, the club had completed a stadium project that would transform both the franchise and the surrounding area of Chester, PA.
The Union gets its name from the United States’ original group of 13 colonies, of which Philadelphia served as the capital city. Furthering the club’s homage to the Revolutionary War and the city’s role in the war, the Union’s primary colors of navy blue and gold are representative of the military uniforms worn by the Continental Army. The club’s motto of “Join or Die” is also an homage to native son Ben Franklin’s famous political cartoon.
