Pittsburgh Panthers Basketball Details
The city of Pittsburgh has undergone a renaissance in recent years, and the Pitt basketball program is one of its prime attractions.
Basketball began at Pitt in 1905, and the team became a national power in the 1920s under head coach Doc Carlson. who directed the Panthers until 1953. Along the way, Carlson was credited with taking the first Eastern team to the West, and participating in the first televised basketball game, in which Pitt defeated Fordham at Madison Square Garden.
Carlson’s best player was Charlie Hyatt, a three-time consensus All-American who later joined his coach in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Nine Panthers have been consensus first-team All-Americans.
Home games are played on campus at Peterson Events Center, which opened in 2002 and has a capacity of more than 12,000. While at a Panthers game you won’t be able to miss the student section, known as the “Oakland Zoo,” where the students sit courtside across from the benches.
ESPN the Magazine once ranked the Peterson Center as the sixth loudest college basketball venue, while USA Today recently tabbed it as the second-best gameday environment in the nation.
A longtime member of the Big East Conference, Pitt joined the ACC in 2013, giving its fans the chance to see national powers North Carolina, Duke and Virginia.
If you’re in the Steel City, get over to the Pitt campus for a game. You won’t be disappointed.
