The Pitt Panthers are a bit of an anomaly in college football, as they play home games in an NFL stadium. Heinz Field holds nearly 70,000 fans and is very close to downtown, making it a great location for big games.

The University of Pittsburgh has fielded a football team since 1890, and is one of the sport’s most storied programs. It ranks among college football’s leaders with more than 50 consensus All-America selections, 25 College Football Hall of Fame inductees, eight members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and a Heisman Trophy winner in Tony Dorsett (1977).

In addition to Dorsett, you’ll recognize plenty of the Pitt alumni in Canton. They include Dan Marino, Mike Ditka, Russ Grimm, Curtis Martin, Chris Doleman, Rickey Jackson and Joe Schmidt.

While Pitt’s meetings with longtime rivals Penn State and West Virginia are no longer annual events, its home schedule against ACC opponents guarantees high-quality college football.

Prior to games, some students begin tailgating on campus. The festivities continue in areas close to the stadium, such as the Great Lawn, where you can book a tailgate in advance without needing to bring any of the usual food or equipment.

Once inside Heinz Field, you’ll see plenty of action from the student section, which is regarded as one of the nation’s best. The “Panther Pitt” usually wears blue T-shirts to match the team’s home uniforms, and the team gathers with the Pitt Band in front of the students to celebrate victories.
