Portland Timbers Playoff History
The Portland Timbers have competed in Major League Soccer since 2011, and in that short time the club has earned a reputation as a premier North American soccer team. The franchise is built on the strong foundation of Portland area soccer and continues a legacy started in 1975 when the club debuted in the NASL. The Timbers have reached the highest levels of American soccer, and the club has competed on a continental stage on multiple occasions. The Timbers Army, the club’s supporters group, has helped create e of the most avid MLS fanbases. The team is known to sell out every home game.
Portland achieved its first MLS victory in an exciting home opener by beating the Chicago Fire 4-2 in 2011. Portland missed out on the playoffs their first two seasons, barely missing them during their inaugural season.. . The 2012 season also saw them win their first Cascadia Cup as an MLS team, an honor awarded to the team with the best head-to-head record in the Pacific Northwest between the Timbers, Seattle Sounders and Vancouver Whitecaps.
The 2013 season ushered in a new era for Timbers soccer when then-coach Caleb Porter took over as the team’s head coach. The club finished atop the Western Conference and qualified for their first MLS playoffs.
Portland was pitted against bitter rivals, the Seattle Sounders, in their first playoff series. The Timbers triumphed over Seattle in the first game 2-1. In the home second leg, Portland jumped out to a 3-0 lead off of goals from Will Johnson, Diego Valeri, and Mamadou “Futty” Danso. The Sounders pulled two late goals back to close the gap, but it proved to be too little too late, and the Timbers advanced past their rivals in their first ever playoff duel. Eventually, Portland fell to Real Salt Lake in the semifinals, but the 2013 season remains etched in Timbers’ fans memories.
After a year’s absence from postseason play, the Timbers returned to the playoffs in 2015.. The playoffs began well with close victories over the LA Galaxy and Vancouver Whitecaps, and the Timbers returned to the Western Conference semifinals. The Timbers defeated FC Dallas to advance to to the MLS Cup Championship..
Portland faced the Columbus Crew and wasted no time in pressuring their opponents. Diego Valeri opened the scoring 27 seconds into the game and Rodney Wallace added another in the 7th minute. The Crew’s Kei Kamara got one goal back for his side, but the Timbers were able to hang on for their first-ever MLS Cup win. Midfielder Diego Valeri was named MVP of the final game.
