Having narrowly missed the 2016 playoffs after winning the MLS Cup championship the previous season, the Portland Timbers entered 2017 with plenty of reason for optimism. The team made several key off-season additions, most notably winger Sebastian Blanco as a Designated Player via a transfer from Argentine club San Lorenzo. Also added was defender Roy Miller, a native of San Jose, Costa Rica, who has more than 275 professional appearances since beginning his career in 2003, which includes six seasons in MLS. Both Miller and new Timbers midfielder David Guzman had spent 2016 in the Costa Rican Primera Division with Club Deportivo Saprissa.

Among the notable players returning from last year’s roster are 2016 MLS All-Stars Darlington Nagbe and Fanendo Adi, who tied for fifth among MLS players with 16 goals last season. The Timbers entered 2017 coming off a campaign in which they set a single-season franchise record for home wins with 12. Among the team’s most impressive performances en route to a 12-3-2 record were a pair of wins over Seattle and a convincing 4-2 victory over Cascadia rival Vancouver. Head coach Caleb Porter is one of the league’s top young talents in terms of managing, and he consistently gets the most out of his team when playing in front of huge home crowds at Providence Park, which is located in the Goose Hollow neighborhood of Portland.
