San Diego Padres Details

The Padres joined the National League as an expansion team in 1969. The team took its name from a minor league team that played in San Diego from 1936 to 1968. The name — fathers” in Spanish—honors the Spanish friars who founded the city of San Diego.

The Padres are still seeking their first World Series title. They have reached the World Series twice, after winning the National League Pennant in 1984 and 1998. The 1998 Padres lost the World Series in a sweep by the Yankees.

1998 also marked the final World Series appearance for Padres legend Tony Gwynn. Gwynn, often called “Mr. Padre,” is widely considered the best player in franchise history. He was known for his high batting average and ability to get on base: Gwynn had over 3000 hits in his MLB career and retired with a batting average of .338. Gwynn’s eight batting titles are tied for the most in NL history. He also earned 15 All-Star nominations and won five Gold Glove awards. After Gwynn passed away from cancer in 2014, the National League named the trophy it awards to the player with the highest batting average the Tony Gwynn Award.

The Padres’ home field is Petco Park, located in downtown San Diego. The park opened in 2004. The Padres are well known for their military appreciation nights and camouflage alternate jerseys. The club was the first pro-sports franchise to hold an annual military appreciation event. The Padres wear their camouflage uniforms at each Sunday home game.

In 2017, the Padres finished in fourth place in the NL West Division. Bright spots for the team include first baseman Wil Myers lead the team with 30 home runs, and pitcher Jhoulys Chacin tallying 13 wins and 153 strikeouts. The Padres had a productive offseason, acquiring third baseman Chase Headley and pitcher Bryan Mitchell from the Yankees. In 2018, the Padres will try to make the playoffs for the first time since 2006.
