San Francisco Giants Details

The Giants have been part of the National League since 1883. The team, which was originally based in New York, has won more games than any other American baseball franchise. The Giants have also won the most NL Pennants (23) and have represented the National League in more World Series (20) than any other team. The Giants’ eight World Series titles are 2nd most in the National League, behind the St. Louis Cardinals.

In 1958, after the team was unable to get a new stadium to replace the famous but aging Polo Grounds, the Giants moved from New York to San Francisco. They moved to California at the same time as the Brooklyn Dodgers, who moved to Los Angeles. The rivalry between the two teams transferred seamlessly to the west coast. To this day, the Dodgers and Giants enjoy one of the fiercest rivalries in sports.

Barry Bonds, the MLB’s leader in career home runs, played for the Giants from 1993 to 2007. Bonds is one of the most decorated hitters in baseball history: he won the Silver Slugger award twelve times and was also a seven time NL MVP winner. In 2007, his final season, Bonds broke Hank Aaron’s home run record when he hit his 756th home run against the Washington Nationals in San Francisco. Bonds finished his career with 762 home runs.

From 2010 to 2014, the Giants went on their most successful run since their move to San Francisco, winning the World Series in three out of five seasons. The Giants’ most recent World Series victory came in 2014, over the Kansas City Royals. Giants’ pitcher Madison Bumgarner was dominant in the series. He was awarded two wins in his appearances as a starter and a save for his relief appearance in Game 7. He gave up just one run in 21 innings and was named MVP of the World Series.

The Giants are California's most popular team

California, home to more MLB teams than any other state (five), can be a battleground for baseball fans. In reality, however, it is a four-team race out West, as the Anaheim Angels — along with the Chicago White Sox — are one of two teams that did not rank as the most popular in a single county.

According to a SeatGeek analysis done prior to the 2019 MLB season, the San Francisco Giants are currently the most popular team in California, with 45 of the state’s 58 total counties.

San Francisco’s rivals to the south, the Los Angeles Dodgers, rank second in-state with 11 counties across the majority of southern California. The Oakland A’s and San Diego Padres control one county apiece, each in their home territory (Alameda County for the A’s, San Diego county for the Padres).
