San Francisco is one of the most significant counterculture hubs of all time and is known for hosting some of the most creative and influential artists during the 1960s and 70s. In 1967, Carlos Santana left Mexico for San Francisco, where he formed the rock band Santana. Santana’s music became recognized in 1969 after performing at the Woodstock music festival. In 1969, the rock band released their debut album Santana, followed by Abraxas (1970) and Santana III (1971). Over the next few years, the band circulated their lineup, with Santana being the only consistent member. In 1999 Santana released the album Supernatural, which gained the group commercial success and wide critical acclaim, reaching No. 1 in eleven countries. The album showcased a stylistic shift for the band, containing a more conventional rock sound, subsequently winning the group a handful of Grammy awards. The most notable singles from the album are ‘Maria Maria’ featuring The Product G&B and ‘Smooth’ featuring Rob Thomas. Santana was later inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and dubbed one of the best-selling groups of all time. Their extensive discography covers a variety of genres, making them a fan-favorite.
