South Carolina Gamecocks Basketball Details
The Gamecocks were one of the greatest success stories of the 2016-17 college basketball season. After a transition period under former Kansas State coach Frank Martin, who took over in 2012, USC broke through with a 26-11 season, good for a seventh seed in the NCAA Tournament. South Carolina shocked the world with a win over second-seeded Duke en route to the school’s first Final Four appearance. Though they lost to eventual runner-up Gonzaga, South Carolina set the stage for the future with one of the most successful seasons in program history. Just a football school? Not anymore.
Despite losing star players Sindarius Thornwell and P.J. Dozier to the NBA, coach Martin returns two starting players from last year in Chris Silva and Maik Kotsar, who will both be counted on as leaders who have experience going deep in postseason play. Six strong new recruits also mean help is on the way in Columbia. The new recruits include guard David Beatty, guard Frank Booker, center and forward Jason Cudd, forward Ibrahim Doumbia, forward Felipe Haase and forward Justin Minaya. Kory Holden, a transfer from Delaware, should also provide some extra firepower. If there’s a coach who can build a roster of new and old players into a team of winners, it’s Martin, widely known as one of the best minds in the game who is known for getting the most out of his players. South Carolina will face an early test in November at the Tire Pros Puerto Rico Tipoff in San Juan.
