The state of North Carolina gets a lot of recognition from college basketball fans and media. But look a few hours to the south, and you’ll find a squad that can hold its own against anyone.

South Carolina basketball first gained prominence in the 1920s, when it won the first of its four Southern Conference regular-season titles. The school was a charter member of the ACC in 1953, but left in 1971 to become an independent, and eventually joined the Southeastern Conference in 1983.

Hall of Fame coach Frank McGuire built a powerhouse in Columbia during his tenure (1964-80). Highlights included an undefeated ACC regular season in 1970, a conference tournament championship in 1971, and three consecutive trips to the Sweet Sixteen.

Head coach Frank Martin did something in 2017 that no other Gamecock coach had accomplished: Lead his team to the Final Four.

Carolina’s great players include two-time ACC Player of the Year John Roche and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame member Alex English, who scored more than 25,000 NBA points.

Being in the SEC comes with some good rivalries – Kentucky, Georgia, and more. But nothing brings out a Gamecock fan’s hate like the in-state nemesis Clemson Tigers. The teams play annually, with USC holding a decisive edge in the all-time series.

The Gamecocks play home games at Colonial Life Arena, which holds 18,000 fans. The facility has seen its share of great games, including a court-storming win over top-ranked Kentucky in 2010.
