Sporting Kansas City Playoff History

Sporting Kansas City is a founding Major League Soccer franchise, and they began play in the inaugural 1996 season. The team has gone through multiple name changes, and were formerly known as the Kansas City Wiz and later the Kansas City Wizards. Sporting Kansas City was adopted in the 2011 season. Despite the various name changes, Sporting Kansas City has played in all MLS seasons and been a playoff powerhouse in American soccer. The U.S. Open Cup is even named after the franchise’s founder, Lamar Hunt.

The Kansas City club won its first-ever match, and the victory sparked a successful first season. They qualified for the playoffs and beat the Dallas Burn in their first playoff series. The club was then knocked out of the semifinals, but the early progress would provide necessary playoff experience for future teams. Kansas City had the best regular season record in the following season, but they were unable to convert in the playoffs.

This all changed at the turn of the century when Kansas City’s stalwart defense stifled attacking threats. In the 2000 season, the Wiz finished with a league-best record and goalkeeper Tony Meola was named MLS MVP. To round out their powerful defense, Peter Vermes was honored with the Defender of the Year award. In the playoffs, Kansas City showed that defense does win championships. Over seven playoff games, the Wizards only allowed their opponents to score four times. They crushed the Rapids 4-2 over three games, revenging their defeat from the 1997 playoffs. A 22nd minute penalty in their third game against the LA Galaxy sent them through to their first MLS Cup Final to face the Chicago Fire. Danish forward Miklos Molnar poached an 11th minute goal for Kansas City to give the club a crucial lead. After scoring, they used their staunch defense to seal their first-ever MLS Cup, solidifying their place in the early history of Major League Soccer.

Kansas City would go on to be a playoff regular, and this high level of play continued under the Sporting Kansas City name. In their first two seasons as SKC, they were the top team in the Eastern Conference. In the 2013 season, SKC won its second MLS Cup over Real Salt Lake. This final went the distance to penalties, and Jimmy Nielsen came up with two huge saves to carry his club to a second trophy.
