Despite being known as the world’s largest music festival, Summerfest is less a traditional fest and more of an 11-day party. Set on the shores of Lake Michigan at the 75-acre Henry Maier Festival Park, with concerts taking place inside the open-air Marcus Amphitheater, the event is a rotating cast of who’s who in popular music. Dreamed up by the late Mayor Henry Maier in the 1960s, Summerfest was originally created as a way to revitalize downtown Milwaukee and bring the community together. What began as a spread out affair, taking place at 35 separate locales throughout the city, has evolved into one stationary location with the best in alt, rock, country, R&B, pop and reggae hitting the stage. Headliners for this year’s Summerfest include Red Hot Chili Peppers, P!nk, Zac Brown Band and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. The 2017 edition is particularly special as it marks the event’s 50th anniversary.
