The Tampa Bay Buccaneers turned initial failure -- losing their first 26 games — into success. The 1979 Bucs, a three-year old franchise at the time, made the NFC Championship. This was just the first step in what has become an impressive playoff history.

Birthed in expansion in the bicentennial, the young Bucs shoehorned their early rosters. Yet, despite inexperience and untested chemistry, Tampa Bay discovered massive potential in Hall of Fame defensive tackle Lee Roy Selmon; Selmon was the first in a lineage of great Tampa defenders. Quarterback Doug Williams developed as well, winning ten games and upsetting the Philadelphia Eagles, 24-17 in the NFC divisional round. The Bucs lost, however, at home in a downpour to the Los Angeles Rams, 9-0.

Playoff success returned in the 1990s. Tampa honed their defensive chops in the 1996 season. Tony Dungy, a soft-spoken defensive coordinator poached from the Minnesota Vikings, signed on as the Bucs’ head coach. With Defensive Coordinator Monte Kiffin at his side, Tampa built a ruthless, high-octane defensive assault.

Despite some success, Dungy’s defensive impact and legacy was short-lived. After two back-to-back Wild Card losses to the Philadelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay fired Dungy and traded for the rights to Coach John Gruden in exchange for four draft picks and $8 million in 2002.

It paid off immediately. Finally, the Tampa Bay offense posed a threat. Gruden, an offensive mastermind, hit the reset button on the offensive depth chart, and guided the team to Super Bowl XXXVII against the Oakland Raiders. The 2002 Bucs presented one of the greatest defensive performances in NFL history, forcing five interceptions (three returned for touchdowns). The upstart Buccaneers defeated the Raiders by an astounding score of 48-21.
