Tampa Bay made its first deep playoff run in 2004. Thanks to breakout years from stars like Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis, the Lightning had won the Southeast Division after the regular season, and they dominated the first two rounds of the playoffs. In the Eastern Conference Final, the Lightning played the Philadelphia Flyers. Tampa’s series with Philadelphia was a back-and-forth battle. Neither team was able to win consecutive games. After allowing a late comeback and overtime goal in Game 6, Tampa responded with a much calmer effort in Game 7 and eliminated the Flyers.
After eliminating Philadelphia, the Lighting played the Calgary Flames in the Stanley Cup Final. One of the series’ most memorable moments was a Game 3 fight between Vincent Lecavalier and Flames captain Jarome Iginla. Though Tampa Bay didn’t win that game and eventually went down three games to two in the series, the Lightning battled back. Martin St. Louis scored in double overtime of Game 6 to tie the series, and Ruslan Fedotenko’s two goals in Game 7 were enough for the Lightning to win the game and their first Stanley Cup.
With their 2008 first overall pick Steven Stamkos as their captain, the Lightning have made multiple deep playoff runs: they reached at least the Eastern Conference Final in three out of four years between 2015 and 2018. In 2015, Stamkos and the Lighting defeated the New York Rangers in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Final to qualify for the second Stanley Cup Final in franchise history. Tampa Bay’s “Kid Line” of Tyler Johnson, Nikita Kucherov, and Ondrej Palat went on an impressive run throughout the postseason, but the Lightning were defeated in the Stanley Cup Final by the Chicago Blackhawks.
In 2018, the Lightning got to within one game of the Stanley Cup Final, but they lost in Game 7 to the Washington Capitals.
NHL Playoff Format
The NHL is split into an Eastern Conference and a Western Conference. Eight teams from each conference qualify for the playoffs.
There are four rounds in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, each decided by a best-of-seven-game series. The fourth and final round pits the top team from the East and top team from the West against one another for the Stanley Cup.
The winners of the Eastern Conference and Western Conference Finals face each other in the Stanley Cup Final.
