It’s not every day that you come across a musical that’s declared a Broadway hit before actually opening on Broadway. Yet, Be More Chill–a new musical based on the 2004 novel of the same name by Ned Vizzini–has attracted a level of buzz comparable to Dear Evan Hansen.
Described by Variety as a “mix of twitchy nu-tech and old-fashioned humanity,” Be More Chill is the story of a teenager named Jeremy who’s as uncool as they come. A bullied social outcast, Jeremy turns to a pill-sized supercomputer in the hopes of transforming into a popular kid and impressing his long-time crush. Things don’t go as planned, and the result is a sci-fi coming of age story that’s both hilariously relatable and refreshingly different.
Be More Chill may draw its source material from a popular teen book, but the musical is very much the brainchild of writers Joe Tracz and Joe Iconis, with Stephen Brackett in the role of director and Chase Brock leading choreography. The entire off-Broadway cast will reprise their roles in the Broadway production, including Will Roland who plays Jeremy.
Fans of the off-Broadway run will next be able to catch Be More Chill during its first preview on February 13 at Lyceum Theatre, after which the musical opens on March 10. With so much excitement around Be More Chill, now is the time to begin to plan your trip to see the future breakout Broadway hit.
