Cirque du Soleil has clearly grown tired of the idea that circuses are a relic of the old world, stilted displays of an outmoded form of entertainment. While their shows have always been heavy on the wow factor in a “how did they do that?” sense, newer offerings from the world-famous troupe have become genuinely pulse-pounding affairs–complete with stunts that fit as well in a big top as they would an action movie.

Volta counts itself among that new guard. The show–soundtracked by Anthony Gonzalez of M83 fame–hopes to turn a younger generation onto the circus by setting it in an alternate universe game show where contestants must perform death-defying stunts to advance. Expect hair suspension, stilt-walking and a BMX sideshow in this thrilling update on Cirque’s typical antics when it comes to Los Angeles early next year.

Reviews of Cirque du Soleil: Volta

“’Volta’ is thrilling because of the acts. Period. They’re all totally fabulous — whether it’s Danila Bim, a Brazilian specialist in the singular art of hair suspension, or the rope skippers or the premium precision walkers, or the even the hugely exciting BMX bikers, most of whom are Canadian.” – Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune

“As always in a Cirque production, there are plenty of feats to amaze, and some that approach the outer edge of the possible.” — Robert Everett-Green, The Globe and Mail
