Exciting times lie ahead for Dodger Stadium. While the legendary venue has hosted concerts, celebrated speakers and even Olympic events, the Chavez Ravine stadium will step into unprecedented territory when it hosts the Semifinal matches of the first ever Guinness International Champions Cup this summer. No official soccer match has been played in the fifty-one year old stadium.

The tournament, which features teams from Europe and the United States, has organized for two semifinal games to take place in Dodger Stadium on August 3. It features an impressive roster of teams from across Europe: Chelsea, A.C. Milan, Valencia, Everton, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Juventus. Equally impressive is the inclusion of the Los Angeles Galaxy, who earned their position in the tournament as the reigning MLS champions. Their work will certainly be cut out for them- they face Real Madrid in the first round at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ. The eight teams will be divided into Eastern and Western groups for bracketing purposes.

The semifinals at Dodger Stadium will consist of two matches among the Western division teams, one as a consolation match for the losers of round one, and the other to progress to the finals at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami, FL. Regardless of the outcome of the preliminary matches, this is breakdown good news for soccer fans in Southern California. It means we’ll have the opportunity to see Real Madrid, Juventus, Everton and the Galaxy all play in one day in the same place. The good news continues, especially for many American fans: tie games will not be allowed and will lead to immediate penalty kicks. With such prestigious clubs arriving for what is sure to be a high-competition event, Dodger Stadium will truly have a momentous day come August 3.
