In a just world, Donna Summer’s musical would be on movie screens before Mamma Mia 2 was even a glimmer in a producer’s eye. But we’ll take what we can get and what we’re getting is a nationwide tour of Summer: The Donna Summer Musical beginning in the fall and running through next August.

The tour will start in October with previews at Rochester’s RBTL Auditorium and an opening at Cleveland’s Connor Palace. The production heads out West in November with a stint at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Pantages. The tour will run through nearly every major US city, closing out at Boston’s Citizens Bank Opera House in August of 2020.

The final run is a fitting end, considering Summer’s own bio. The musical’s website describes her as a “girl from Boston with a voice from heaven, who shot through the stars from gospel choir to dance floor diva.” The play promises to show how Summer “risked it all to break through barriers, becoming the icon of an era and the inspiration for every music diva who followed.”
