Hadestown, much like Hamilton before it, is a single person’s musical take on an old story that blossomed into a huge Broadway hit. From the seed of a concept album about Orpheus and Eurydice, the musical has grown into an 8-time Tony Winner.

“I’ve been working on this show on and off for 13 years. I stated working on it when I was in my twenties and living in Vermont,” mastermind Anaïs Mitchell said in an interview with Town & Country. “The first version of the show was a do-it-yourself community theater project and all of the company was made up of friends from different bands from all around Vermont. We toured in this bus that was painted silver and played town halls and music venues.”

From there it grew into one of the most-beloved Broadway shows currently running. The production that won Broadway’s top prize of Best Musical this year announced that folks outside of New York City will get the chance to see their Depression-era take on the Greek myth. After a performance of “Way Down Hadestown” and “Wait For Me” on Good Morning America, the cast shared that they are hitting the road next year for a series of shows.
