Hands On A Hardbody Broadway 2013

With the success of musicals adapted from beloved novels and cult films, it was only a matter of time before Broadway began to look to other popular media for its next big inspiration: Why not the documentary? Hands On A Hardbody, the new production from Phish frontman Trey Anastasio, is loosely based on the 1997 documentary of the same name, which follows contestants as they participate in an annual “endurance competition” in Longview, TX. Twenty-four participants each place a hand on a pickup truck, and whoever can keep their hand on the vehicle the longest – without squatting, sitting or leaning on the truck for support – gets to keep the car. Sounds like material rife with dramatic potential.

So far, reviews of the play have been mixed to positive, with one NYT reviewer describing it as a work that “…sings sincerely and with a rough-edged humor,” and which boasts a “soulful score by Amanda Green and Trey Anastasio.” Still in its early stages, Hands on a Hardbody only began its official run last week, on Thursday, March 21. With such a big name as Anastasio’s attached, tickets are selling quickly – though luckily, we’ve managed to compile a host of discount links below!
