James Franco in ‘Of Mice and Men’ on Broadway
James Franco, he of questionable Instagram choices, is currently starring in Of Mice and Men. Since March 19, Franco and fellow actor Chris O’Dowd are playing the literary duo George and Lennie made famous by John Steinbeck’s classic 1937 novella. Appearing in Of Mice and Men will be a Broadway debut for Franco, O’Dowd, and Leighton Meester, who plays Curley’s unnamed wife. The production will last for fourteen weeks with shows at New York City’s Longacre Theatre for the entire run.
While the show has received mixed reviews, the cast of popular actors, including Tony Award winner Jim Norton, will appeal to literature nerds and mere mortals alike. Much of the story’s charm is in Steinbeck’s portrayal of the friendship shared by two migrant workers, George and Lennie. The story is set in California and depicts the Depression Era malaise and economic hardships interwoven throughout life in the 1930s. George and Lennie spend most of the story working together on a farm, but are fueled by their dreams of buying their own to live on and operate. Most know how the story ends, but in the interest of preserving literary secrets, that won’t be revealed here. Purchase tickets to the production’s limited engagement to see the story unfold for yourself.
