MLB Weekly Ticket Price Rankings 6/6/11
At SeatGeek, we believe that ticket prices are a reflection of fan loyalty and confidence. In light of this understanding, the current leader in MLB ticket prices is somewhat surprising given its current record. Chicago Cubs tickets rank number one this week, with an average price of $101.98 — over 11 dollars more than the second place Boston Red Sox.
The Cubs are currently the second worst team in the National League, with a win-loss record of 23-34. The debt and injury-plagued team is on a 6 game losing streak which includes three losses to the Houston Astros — the only National League team ranked below them. Controversial pitcher Carlos Zambrano may have described the Cubs franchise best when he recently called his team embarrassing.
So why are Cubs tickets selling at such high prices? Maybe fans are looking to witness some Zambrano drama first-hand. This likely speaks to the loyalty that the Cubbies tend to enjoy from their windy city brethren.

Either way, don’t expect the trend to hold. Eventually, real fan interest in teams that are playing well, like the Red Sox, Phillies, or Yankees (all in this week’s top 10 and also from very loyal markets) should overtake the tanking Cubs in price trends.
