‘Newsies’ to Give Regards to Broadway
Bad news, Newsies fans—your favorite Broadway musical has just announced the end of its three-year run at the Nederlander Theatre in New York City. In just a few short weeks—on August 24—Newsies will close after 1,005 performances. To commemorate the occasion, a new retrospective video has been unveiled on the show’s Facebook page. But don’t fret—their North American tour begins in October, so if you really need to get your Newsies fix, you can find a date in your area. It kicks off in Schenectady, NY and will run for 43 weeks spanning over 25 cities in the United States and Canada. Visit the musical’s official webpage for more information.
With music written by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book by Harvey Fierstein, Newsies was a smash hit pretty much directly upon its debut on March 15, 2012. With an initial investment of $5 million, the musical recouped its money within seven months, making it the fastest of any of the Disney Broadway musicals to turn a profit. Though the Broadway version is closing, producers are making plans to bring the musical to London’s West End (perhaps at the Piccadilly Theatre, which is currently the London home of Jersey Boys.).
