The 6 Coolest Plays Coming to Broadway in 2019
If you enjoyed the many awesome plays on Broadway this year, you’ll no doubt be eager to see what’s coming in 2019. As it turns out, some unique plays are coming that you should keep your eye on. From a Shakespearean sequel to a gender-bending take on a classic, here are six upcoming Broadway hits for theater fans to get excited about!
Be More Chill @ Lyceum Theatre
Based on the novel by Ned Vizzini, this musical spent a few years off-Broadway steadily building a cult following. The story of the show is how an unpopular teen uses a special pill to “chill” his way to the top of his high school hierarchy. Be More Chill will have its first preview on February 13, 2019, and then open March 10 at the Lyceum Theatre.
Gary: A Sequel To Titus Andronicus @ Booth Theater
Titus Andronicus is widely regarded as William Shakespeare’s first tragedy and certainly his bloodiest play. The sequel Gary is set during the fall of Rome, and centers on a pair of “lowly servants” (portrayed by Nathan Lane and Andrea Martin), charged with cleaning up the bodies after the bloody aftermath of bloody battles and civil war. This last word on Shakespeare’s work will have its preview at Booth on March 5, 2019, and then open April 11.
Beetlejuice @ Winter Garden Theatre
You might be reluctant to sing the title three times, but fans of the gothic cult classic will no doubt be eager to catch the musical adaptation of Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice. Actors Alex Brightman and Sophia Anne Caruso landed the lead roles of Beetlejuice and Lydia. The play has yet to open off-Broadway–the show will premiere in Washington D.C.’s National Theatre in October–but there’s already buzz about the musical’s Broadway debut. The Beetlejuice preview is set for March 2019, and it’s expected to open in April.
Tootsie @ Marriott Marquis
Based on the Academy Award-winning movie starring Dustin Hoffman, Tootsie tells the story of an actor named Michael who is so difficult to work with no one would hire him… so he tries his luck as a “her.” One major difference between the movie and musical? Michael’s solution is to join a Broadway play instead of a soap opera. Tootsie’s first preview at the Marriott Marquis is set for March 29; the play opens on April 23.
Glengarry Glen Ross @ TBA
The legendary David Mamet play is returning to Broadway. Though there’s just one catch: this time, the characters of Glengarry Glen Ross will all be women. Although Amy Morton is a staple of the stage, this production finds her in the director’s seat. No one is quite sure what all-star female cast will appear on stage when the play opens, but expectations are quite high. A preview date is not yet set, but the plan is for this unique revival of Glengarry Glen Ross to open May 2019.
Jagged Little Pill @ TBA
Who would have thought the smash hit 90s album by Canadian singer Alanis Morissette would get turned into a highly popular musical? Audiences off-Broadway are falling head over feet for the play, which already had to add extra shows due to high demand. The show centers on a multi-ethnic, multi-generational family “coping with a series of disturbing events.” While there are plans to bring the popular musical to Broadway, it’s not known exactly where or when it will open. Stay tuned, because it’s only a matter of time before Jagged Little Pill arrives on the Great White Way.
