Calling all thespian Dead Heads! Broadway World has just reported that according to an Equity casting notice, a Grateful Dead musical in the works.

Currently titled the “Untitled Grateful Dead Project” with Sugar Magnolia Productions LLC at the helm, the musical is described as “a semi-fantastical and immersive Americana tale of the Jones family in 1920’s Cumberland, Maryland, as they con, swindle and gamble their way into riches.”

The casting notice goes on to say that “all must work and play well together and must be superior musicians,” and that actors should prepare a brief song in the style of bluegrass, blues, country and classic rock. (Let’s hope this does better than the 1998 Robert Hunter/Jerry Garcia Cumberland Blues musical which closed after less than a week of shows.)

The only member of the band currently attached to the project is Dead & Company keyboardist Jeff Chimenti who will provide musical direction. The auditions will be held on June 16 with reading slated for July.

News of the project comes less than a week after the release of the Netflix docuseries Long Strange Trip which chronicles the band from formation to Jerry Garcia’s death.
