Summer is just around the corner and you know what that means: time to pack the Snuggie away for the winter and bust out your rompers! It also means that the annual smorgasbord of electronic music festivals are announcing their lineups and selling their tickets – fast! Electric Daisy Carnival

Info: The first ever Electric Daisy Carnival was held way back in 1997, in Los Angeles, CA, at the Shrine Expo Hall. Founded by Insomniac Events, the annual gathering of ravers and hipsters alike has grown exponentially and is now hosted annually in six locations around the world. In 2009, it was expanded from a one-day event to two, and back in 2011 the Las Vegas-hosted EDC lasted three days and drew in a crowd of 230,000. That’s a whole lot of glowsticks, people.

Movement Electronic Music Festival
Location: Detroit, MI

Info: You may remember the Electronic Music Festival when it began in 2000 under the moniker Detroit Electronic Music Festival. The event was part of an annual series of EDM showcases held in Detroit each Memorial Day weekend. It wasn’t until 2003 – when city officials turned over the festy reigns to techno artist Derrick May – was the name officially changed to Movement. While it suffered from a few rocky years financially, the festival is back on its feet with attendance steadily rising. Last year’s event saw a crowd of 107,343 people, the highest its been since 2004.

Electric Forest
Location: Rothbury, MI
Dates: 6/27-6/30

Info: Electric Forest, otherwise known as “what used to be Rothbury Festival,” otherwise known as “the badass festy on a farm in Michigan” has finally solidified itself as a major player in the EDM event scene. Initially produced by AEG Live and known as Rothbury Festival from 2008-2009, the event went by the wayside due to zoning complications in 2010. Jam band String Cheese Incident helped to resurrect it the following year, and since 2011 the four-day extravaganza has been operating under the name Electric Forest, with the music focused on more electronic/DJ acts.

Camp Bisco
Location: Mariaville, NY
Dates: 7/11-7/13

Info: Launched in 1999 by trance-jam band the Disco Biscuits, the initial concept behind Camp Bisco was to blend the jam band and electronica genre, both of which were gaining fast popularity at the time. Now, 14 years later, this festival has become a main player in the jam band / EDM event scene. With consistently strong – and varied – lineups, every July self-described “biscuits” and music fans alike join forces to party in upstate New York for three days. Because honestly, when else would you want to party in upstate New York?

Electric Zoo 2013
Location: New York, NY
Dates: 8/30-9/1

Info:Electric Zoo, not to be confused with Electric Daisy, is a fairly new festival hosted annually on Randall’s Island in NYC. Launched in 2009, it’s first year featured 55 artists over the course of two days with 26,000 people in attendance. And last year’s Electric Zoo saw its largest turnout yet: 110,000 people in the span of three days. Perhaps the Pretty Lights and Skrillex headliners had something to do with its success?

Sónar
Location: Barcelona, Spain
Dates: June 13 – 15

Info: Sónar, or what is officially described as “festival of Advanced Music and Multimedia Art,” has been bringing cutting edge music and technology to fans in Barcelona since 1994. The three-day affair boasts the most up-to-date technological developments and the most relevant national and international artists. In this case, “relevant” means epic DJs and EDM artists. The festival is broken out into the “by day” and “by night” portions, with the day featuring art and technology demos, and the evening focusing solely on dancing and DJs.

Melt! Festival
Location: Ferropolis, Germany
Dates: July 19 – 21

Info: Melt! Festival has been “melting” (see what I did there?) the faces of EDM fans since its inception in 1997. Held in the giant open-air museum Ferropolis, the event has grown from a gathering of 2,000 to one which spreads out over six floors with over 80 live acts. The event is known for its cheerful and “elevated” vibes, which are only increased by the nearby fresh water lake which smelly ravers can wash their hair in. Melt! has also been credited as one of the only true “electronic meets rock” festivals around.

Tomorrowland Festival
Location: Boom, Belgium
Dates: July 26 – 28

Info: Tomorrowland is the largest EDM festival in the world. If that fact alone isn’t enough to convince you to take a mini-vacation to Boom, Belgium, how about the fact that last year they were host to David Guetta, Swedish House Mafia, Skrillex and Avicii, which drew in a crowd of 180,000? Or how about that the aforementioned DJs were just four of 400 on the lineup? Organized in 2005, the festy has grown to house nine stages and take place over the course of three days (it started out as just one). It’s also set in a fairytale location with similarly styled decor, making this a true EDM paradise.

In 2012, the cheapest average ticket price for the six included festies was Camp Bisco, while the most expensive was Electric Zoo. Surprisingly, Electric Forest – the longest of all the festivals listed here – is priced moderately at $245.43.
