Essence Music Festival is back this summer with a killer lineup. The NOLA-based festival has been going strong since 1995, when it originated as a one-time event to celebrate the 25th anniversary of ESSENCE magazine. Also lovingly referred to as “the party with a purpose,” Essence Music Festival falls on 4th of July weekend, taking place from July 3 – July 6. Headlining this year’s edition of Essence are Bruno Mars and Janet Jackson. Also on the docket are performers such as Janelle Monaé, Patti LaBelle, Tank and the Bangas, Ari Lennox, and Raphael Saadiq.

Michelle Ebanks, CEO of Essence, recently shared more about this year’s lineup and the festival’s history.

“These two powerhouses, along with our robust slate of programming, performances and tributes, will continue our legacy of cultural excellence and dynamic, only-at-Essence experiences that excite, elevate and inspire,” Ebanks said regarding the lineup. “This is a milestone year for Essence and our community as we celebrate 50 years of creating opportunities for our culture to shine and the role of black women in making it possible for us to do what no other brand has done.”
