You wouldn’t think country music would be popular in the Big Apple, and, well, you’d be right. Though not the top sound in the city that never sleeps, it’s gaining by leaps and bounds—the city’s first country radio station in 17 years, Nash FM, started sending out soundwaves in 2013. It’s no surprise then that New York is about to get its first country musical festival: FarmBorough. Taking place on festival-favorite venue Randall’s Island on June 26-28, FarmBorough will feature headliners Dierks Bentley, Luke Bryan, and Brad Paisley along with Wade Bowen, Brandy Clark, Maddie & Tae, Kip Moore, Ashley Monroe, Randy Houser, and many more. Also in the spotlight will be the “Next From Nashville” stage, where undiscovered talent can strut their stuff. Three-day passes (which start at $225 for the weekend) are on sale starting November 6. VIP packages are also available. For more information, visit the festival’s website.

The genre of country music originated around Atlanta, GA in the 1920s, although the term “country music” wasn’t coined until the 1940s. As of 2009, country music was the most-listened-to radio genre during the evening commute (people winding down, perhaps?), and the second most-listened-to in the morning commute in the U.S.
