Asbury Park, NJ, is gearing up for “Light of Day Week,” a weeklong series of concerts, which, surprisingly, will not be benefiting Sandy victims. Instead, the proceeds (as with all Light of Day concerts) will go to support Parkinson’s research and help to find a cure for it and other generative neuromuscular disorders. Though Light of Day concerts have been held in Asbury Park for the past 13 years, only last year did Mayor Ed Johnson proclaim January 17th-21st “Light of Day Week.” This year, the event promises to be better than ever with more than a hundred artists playing 25 concerts at 10 different venues through out the city. Headliners to look forward to include Dramarama, Denny Laine and the The Tangiers Blues Band.

Bruce Springsteen is a pivotal feature at the Asbury Park concerts and has played nine out of the last 12. Last year, he made a not-so-surprise appearance with Grushecky and the Houserockers at the Paramore Theater. He opened his set with a solo performance of “Incident on 57th St” and ended with an acoustic version of “Thunder Road” that had the whole audience singing along. (How could they not?) Thanks in part to Springsteen’s efforts, the concert series has been growing and last year nearly 5,000 fans came to the Asbury Park for the festivities.
