Wanna get funky, New York (well, funkier than usual)? On June 27, you’ll be able to at the NOLAfunk Crawfish & Music Festival. Taking place on perfect-in-summer Governors Island, this inaugural festival boasts a “New Orleans Meets New York” feel. Rebirth Brass Band and Bonerama are headlining, and New York City-based DJ Logic, New Orleans-based Billy Iuso & The Restless Natives, and High & Mighty Brass Band will be joining them on stage. Prior to the musical stylings, a happy hour will be held from 4:00pm-6:00pm featuring two-for-one drinks and, of course, a ton of crawfish prepared by Chef Shaggy, the self-proclaimed NOLA Crawfish King. DJ Logic will hit the stage at 5:00pm, and the live music runs from 6:00pm until last crawdad standing. Wanna go? Tickets are $39.50 (or $55 with crawfish included) if bought in advance and $50 at the door. Scoop them up while you can—they’re on sale now.

So how do you do a crawfish boil? You need a big-ass pot (60 to 80 quarts), a strainer, and a propane heater. Seasonings are also a must, with cayenne pepper, hot sauce, salt, lemons, and bay coming out as top choices. Also on the menu? Corn, new potatoes, onions, garlic, and shrimp. Boil away, dump onto yesterday’s newspaper, and enjoy—and expect to get a little messy.
