Ballin’ on a Budget: NYC Concerts $30 and Under (12/13/13)
You spent all your money on Christmas gifts and good cheer, but still have one weekend left before going home for the holidays where you will inevitably suck from your parents’ financial life-teet. What to do, what to do? Check below for a list of some worthwhile concerts in and around the city, all $30 and under.
The Pizza Underground @ Baby’s All Right
Friday, December 13
If you haven’t heard about The Pizza Underground – the pizza-themed Velvet Underground cover band that features Macauley Culkin on kazoo and vocals – then you’ve been living under an old Papa Ginos box. The five-piece “tribute” band made waves on the internet last week when a nine-song demo surfaced featuring songs like, “Take a Bite of the Wild Slice” and “I’m Beginning to Eat the Slice.” Check them out FO’ FREE at Baby’s All Right in Williamsburg tonight – complimentary pizza will be served.
!!! / Holy Fuck / Alex English @ Webster Hall
Friday, December 13
Anybody trying to describe to their friends Webster Hall’s Friday night bill is going to have one hell of a time. First, a band name that is literally impossible to pronounce; next, an exclamatory curse word with religious connotations; and finally, a DJ who shares his name with a retired basketball player. While this may seem like a mish-mosh of unrelated performers, they actually all fall under the vein of experimental electronic punk rocky stuff. FYI, this show will take place upstairs in the ballroom.
Straight to Hell: The Clash Tribute @ Fontanas
Saturday, December 14
Sure, discovering new music is fun, but there’s something extremely satisfying about singing along to the classics. If you’re looking to recapture your punk rock-filled nostalgia, head to Fontana’s on the LES to catch Straight to Hell: The Clash Tribute this Saturday. The band will perform the full Clash concert from 1979 at NYC’s Palladium, and even gave a personal invite to former Clash member Mick Jones. Who knows, maybe he’ll take the stage for a surprise performance (but probably not).
Hot Water Music @ Webster Hall
Saturday, December 14
OK, so this show actually breaks the rules of this article by $0.50, but I mean – it’s Hot Water Music! These dudes are legends in the ’90s post-hardcore, punk-rock scene. They were emo back when emo actually meant something. They were packing sweaty nightclubs while we were still being potty trained. And possibly the coolest thing about them is they’re named after a novel by one of the greatest American authors, Charles Bukowski. Am I getting through here?!
Lloyd Banks @ Stage 48
Sunday, December 15
If you’re the type of person who would opt to see live music on a frigid school night over ordering a slice of pizza, slipping into footy pajamas and watching 12 episodes of “Bar Rescue” in a row, then going to see Lloyd Banks perform at Stage 48 seems like a no-brainer. Remember, this is one of the members of the 50 Cent-fronted g-g-g-G-UNIT!, as well as the brains behind the uber-catchy “I’m So Fly” and “On Fire.” The only catch is that you’ll have to slog through midtown West to get to the venue.
